Greenwood Gravel Grinder reschedule for 2020

Greenwood Gravel Grinder Postponed for 2020

New date scheduled for September 5th, 2020

We are saddened to announce that due to the Covid-19 Virus outbreak we are having to reschedule the Greenwood Gravel Grinder to later this year. The CDC has recommended that all gatherings of more than 100 people be cancelled, and USA Cycling has announced that all permits for events will be cancelled through April 5th. While we are not a USA Cycling sanctioned event, we stand with the belief that we need to do our part to help prevent the spread of the virus.

While everyone who would participate in the gravel event is at an extremely low risk of any severe illness, it’s entirely possible to be a transmitter and affect those who are more susceptible to severe or critical illness.

The timing of the event in late March also coincides with peak pollen season in South Carolina. We can not, in good faith, allow 200+ riders to be breathing hard, coughing, and blowing snot rockets on each other (yes, it happens). There is also the issue of cyclists sharing resources at the rest areas, and having the volunteers exposed to this. Finally, the free food served afterwards (event with proper hand washing) exposes everyone to potential for unknowingly spreading the virus.

It’s only with these precautions that we can help in stopping the spread. Again, all of the cyclists who are well enough to ride 50k or 100k on challenging gravel terrain would more than likely not show any symptoms beyond very mild. However, many of us are in contact every day with either elderly or people with compromised immune systems.

With this, we have decided to reschedule the Greenwood Gravel Grinder to Saturday, September 5th, 2020. We have scoured the calendar in order to find a weekend that does not conflict with any other events in the nearby area. We realize that this is Labor Day weekend, which has the double benefit of starting a long weekend with an amazing gravel event. For those looking to make a weekend trip, there are many amazing lakes and campgrounds close to Greenwood on the SC/GA border. Any one of these places would make an amazing family trip.

For those who have registered already, we will defer your registration to the September 5th date. If you plan on attending, there is nothing more you need to do. You will automatically be entered in the September 5th event.

If you can not attend the September 5th event, then we can transfer your entry into one of our other events (all are scheduled to go on as planned for right now). In the event that there is no possible way to attend any of our future events, we will be issuing refunds for entry. We hope that you do plan to ride, as we have incurred expenses already in the organizing of the event.

One last personal note, while these are unprecedented times, and the cancellation of events is altering our calendar, it’s not something that should alter our lifestyle. The reason why all of us will not have any issues with Covid-19 beyond very mild symptoms is because of the lifestyle we lead. Please, keep riding your bike, stay active, eat healthy, and plan on showing up September 5th in great shape!
